Scholar Profile: Vanity David, 16

Vanity David is a motivated young woman who attends Young Women's Leadership School, a New York City public school with a strong relationship with Parsons School of Design. In addition to her love of the visual arts, Vanity is an avid dancer who attended Ballet Hispanico School of Dance this summer prior to joining The Lawrence Scholars Program. In her Pre-College Academy Drawing and Painting courses, Vanity experienced many things for the first time including drawing from a live figure model and using oil paints.

In her application to the program, Vanity was asked to answer the question, "What part or place in your community inspires you? Why?" In her response, Vanity compared dance and the visual arts, her two chosen forms of expression, "As I performed onstage, I continued to think as if I was dancing with paint brushes, painting a huge masterpiece with my feelings and the movement of my body."

In addition to developing her drawing and painting skills, Vanity is excited about exploring other fields, particularly graphic design.

Scholar Profile: Julius Kwaku Rainey, 17

Scholar Julius Rainey sits by Parsons' junior Eon Huntley while designer and Professor Julian Guthrie shows Eon's work
Julius had a productive semester in Adam Brentıs Drawing course. In his assessment, Adam found that Julius "has a strong work ethic and drive to improve." Julius plans to continue building his observational drawing skills by taking Drawing II with Adam Brent this spring. In his self-evaluation, Julius stated that he liked Adam's style of teaching and that the only weakness of the course was that it was too short.

Julius is interested in both fashion and architecture. He sees the architectural design in his neighborhood as the "art of Harlem."

Julius lives with his mother, Deveor Rainey, who is the sole supporter of Julius and his three siblings. Deveor came to both Juliusıs interview for the scholarship and the final fall exhibition. She was astounded by the work Julius produced in the fall Drawing course and is looking forward to seeing the spring exhibition.

Last year, as a senior at Washington Irving High School Omayra, or Omy as she likes to be called, attended pre-college classes at Parsons. This experience created a seamless bridge to college and she is currently attends Parsons through the Higher Education Opportunity Program as a Foundation student. She is hoping that being a mentor in the Lawrence Scholars Program will "open her mind to new fields" as we expose the Scholars to career options.

Omy was born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City. In the bio she wrote introducing herself to the Scholars, Omy explained that her two passions are playing the piano and art. Omy intends to major in Illustration and hopes to one day illustrate her own books.

She also included the following message to the Lawrence Scholars: "Hopefully, this experience will help you become better artists and develop your own style to help change our world."
