The Jacob Lawrence and Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Papers from 1937 to 1989 are housed in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution. The papers include correspondence with government agencies, art schools, galleries, and friends; publications; biographical and career information; speeches; writings by and about Lawrence; reproductions of art work; exhibition catalogs, announcements, and posters; photographs of Lawrence and his work; printed material; and clippings. The material includes correspondence from Romare Bearden, Leonard Bocour, Terry Dintenfass, Fritz Eichenberg, Philip Evergood, Edith Halpert, and others.
The Archives of the Smithsonian also include the transcript of an extensive interview with Jacob Lawrence conducted by Carroll Greene in 1968.
