The Lawrence Scholars Program has established collaborative relationships with several Harlem-based non-profit organizations, including Boys and Girls Harbor,
Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF), New York City Mission Society, Harlem Children's Zone, and Children's Art Carnival of Harlem, as well as with Harlem-based public high schools such as Young Women's Leadership School and Thurgood Marshall Academy.
On November 2nd, over 100 high school students, parents, teachers, and guidance counselors from the New York City area came to Parsons to learn more about art and design, and the powerful role these fields can play in the democratic process. Participation from non-profit organizations and schools in Harlem was very high due to The Lawrence Program Coordinator's outreach. Presentations by Parsons Dean Paul Goldberger, as well as Communication Design Chair and Associate Chair Charles Nix and Ted Byfield, considered the current and potential role of design in society. After a festive lunch and materials fair, attendees participated in hands-on workshops with Parsons' faculty and students. A separate workshop for guidance counselors, parents, and educators, addressed the admissions process in greater detail.
