Objectives:
  • Students learn about the hero, Harriet Tubman, by interpreting the art of Jacob Lawrence's Harriet Tubman series created in 1939-1940.
  • Students understand that one way an artist tells stories is by creating a series of separate images with accompanying text.
  • Students brainstorm about what constitutes a hero and how artists portray heroes.
    Students learn how the artist used symbols to convey important ideas about Harriet Tubman's heroic deeds.
  • Students create their own artwork about a hero, using elements of art to emphasize important characteristics.
